Fluorescent tubes, HID lamps, CFLs & other mercury containing lights

The MRT mercury recycling plant operated by CMA EcoCycle is a professional, world recognized and accredited plant designed for processing and recycling large quantities of end of life fluorescent tubes, HID lamps, CFLs and all other mercury containing lights and globes of all sizes and shapes. The process is very safe, efficient and in accordance with the strictest environmental regulations. Our plant meets all current Australian EPA environmental directives.

Mercury containing lights are crushed, the crushed material is sorted into individual components, such as glass, aluminium, other metals, plastics and the mercury containing phosphor powder. The mercury is recovered from the phosphor powder and each material is recycled. The plant does not generate any waste for landfill. Everything is recovered and recycled.

In addition to recycling lighting products, our state of the art MRT distiller is designed to extract mercury from all kinds of mercury bearing waste such as electrical devices, mercury button cell batteries, mercury containing chemical waste, mental amalgam, catalysts, activated carbon, etc. A batch of mercury bearing waste is placed in the vacuum chamber and the appropriate program is selected. The waste material is treated in a fully automated PLC controlled process, making it extremely safe and efficient. Heat and vacuum is applied causing the mercury to vaporize. The organic particles carried by the gases are oxidized in the post combustion chamber prior to entering the highly efficient cooling traps, where the mercury condenses into liquid mercury.

CMA EcoCycle has recently commissioned a new MRT Continuous Flow Distiller which has been especially adapted for distillation of a range of powders and other materials with low organic and high moisture contents. The continuous flow process gives several advantages compared to batch process distillers. It facilitates handling of mercury contaminated wastes, it is extremely flexible and is able to process large volumes of waste materials. Due to its ability to operate continuously, this type of distiller is also very cost effective, handling up to 3-5 tonnes of mercury containing waste per day. It is a unique piece of equipment and one of only ten in the world today, and ours is the largest with the biggest diameter feeding chamber. CMA EcoCycle strives to keep one step ahead, bringing innovative and state of the art technology to provide our clients with the most efficient and cost effective way of processing mercury bearing waste.

In each state and territory we have the new MRT Globe and Fluorescent Crushers, which under vacuum crush the material and place the finished pieces in a sealed vessel. These are then transported to our large separation plant and the individual components are sorted and ready to find their way into their respective recycling fields. The advantage of crushing the collected waste locally is that the volume which is then transported to our main recycling plant is reduced by about 80%, saving transport costs and generating less greenhouse gasses.

The CMA EcoCycle mercury recycling operation is large enough to collect and recycle every end of life fluorescent tube and Mercury containing light produced in Australia and New Zealand, with capacity to spare.

CMA EcoCycle provides prepaid boxes for your fluorescent tubes or globes and can arrange delivery or pick up from any part of Australia. Any amount, any size, any type and brand, we handle them all and provide recycling certificates as evidence that your mercury containing lights were recycled in an environmentally responsible manner and in line with the current EPA regulations. For larger clients with large volumes of tubes and globes, we have stillages for the safe storage and transportation to our recycling centres.
